“The Quarters” Duplex is one of the few remaining worker housing structures on the former Roebling Plantation on Skidaway Island. The goal of this project was to plan the adaptive re-use and rehabilitation of this historic cabin. The site is located on state property, among a group of 35 – 40 historic structures that are eligible for National Historic Register status, currently owned by the University System of Georgia.This cabin dates back to the 1930s and was used as a bunkhouse for, Roebling’s workers who commuted to the island from Pin Point, Sandfly and other coastal communities.

The cabin and its workers are part of a rich history of this area and the rehabilitated cabin serves as an interpretive educational tool. The cabin is open to the public, and panels are displayed that depict the history of this structure and tells the story of the workers and past of this site.

The work consisted of assessing the structural condition of the building and designing the necessary repairs to make it structurally sound. Additionally, the windows, doors, roof, and porches were restored. Much attention was taken to repair or replace only the portions that were too far deteriorated, leaving most of the original material in place. The addition of a ramp to the front porch made the cabin ADA accessible.

As with all of our historic projects, particularly those listed or eligible for listing on the National Register, our firm takes special care to ensure that the work that we recommend is acceptable under the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation.
