HISTORY
Lominack Kolman Smith Architects was formed after the 2001 merger of Lominack and Associates Architects and Kolman & Smith Architects. In the decade since the merger, LKSA has been one of Savannah’s premier architecture firms, completing numerous high profile projects that have been recognized with many awards. The most recent decade only tells part of the LKSA story. With a portfolio that spans five decades, this page highlights some of the major projects that tell our story.
Ronald Kolman, FAIA
Any history of LKSA would be remiss to not mention Ronald Kolman. The earliest roots of LKSA can be traced to 1960, when Ron founded his architectural practice in Savannah. That firm was later known as Kolman & Smith Architects, when his daughter Anne joined him in business. Recognized as an innovator in his field, Ron’s work earned him Fellowship within the AIA, the Bronze Medal and the Rothschild Award from AIA Georgia, and AIA Savannah named their highest award in his honor. But, service was more important than awards. Ron served on the Metropolitan Planning Commission, the Historic District Board of Review, the board of the Historic Savannah Foundation and Union Mission, and was a six-time President of the AIA’s South Georgia Chapter. He also was a pretty great Santa Claus at Christmastime. While we sadly lost Ron in December 2009, his memory and legacy live on in every LKSA project.
Our Architecture Endures
In 1963, Ron Kolman designed the A OK Market at 1127 East Montgomery Cross Roads. This beautiful example of mid-century modern architecture still stands today in much the same condition as it was almost 50 years ago. Now as Quality Bike, Ron's architecture lives on.
