     Tybee Theater                                      Tybee Island, Georgia
The Tybee Post Theater was once a hub of the social scene on Tybee Island, Georgia. Built in 1932 by the United States government for soldiers at Fort Screven, the building was sold to Savannah Beach in 1946. From then until the early 1960s, the theater was a magnet for people seeking entertainment at the beach.

After Savannah Beach sold the property, the theater served as a storage space, until 1994 when developers purchased the property with plans to demolish the theater and build condominiums. While preparing for this conversion the interior of the theater was gutted. But before the developers could complete the demolition, their condominium plans fell through.

The Tybee Island Historical Society saved the structure from demolition, and the building was then transferred to the Friends of the Tybee Theatre, the current owner. Their goal now is to rehabilitate the structure as a stage and movie theater. When complete it will be the only functioning theater on Tybee Island.

While the concrete floors and brick walls are in good condition, the roof of the theater was in need of extensive repair. Lominack Kolman Smith Architects was retained by the Friends of Tybee Theatre in 2005 to complete the first phase of this important rehabilitation project. This first phase consisted of: repairing the roof structure, shingle replacement, a new gutter system, repair of exterior eaves and decorative features, brick repair, and closing the building off to the elements. When the roof deck was repaired, we retained as much as the historic deck as possible, replacing it only where necessary.
