The final design of the new Ellis Square at City Market is has recently been approved by City Council. Using input collected from several charettes involving local stakeholders and citizens, two designs were originally created and one was chosen for final development ― the "Open Space" plan. The Open Space plan will feature a large plaza and green space, allowing the flexibility for larger gatherings that many of the other squares cannot provide. A depressed elliptical lawn will create a safe place for children to play while providing seating at its perimeter. An angled fountain will be centrally located for children to run through and passers-by to enjoy, and a single structure on the northwest corner will feature a hospitality and information center. The adjacent plaza can act as lunch seating by day and performance stage by night.
Frogtown Lofts is a new residential development in the old Frogtown neighborhood of Savannah. Traditionally a working-class area, Frogtown was at one time anchored by Union Station, a bustling railroad depot on the west side of town. The design of Frogtown Lofts will integrate its historic settings with the needs of 21st century living. The large expanses of glass, solid concrete construction, and industrial character takes its inspiration from the Bauhaus-influenced historic switchboard building on the site (to be restored). The buildings portray a modern interpretation of the traditional Savannah row-house pattern.
In addition, LEED
certification will be sought for Frogtown Lofts, an acknowledgment of the
importance of sustainable construction for Savannah's present and future. Union Mission Dutchtown Campus The Union Mission Dutchtown campus will be located on Middle Ground Road in Savannah. The 48-unit income-assistance housing is currently in schematic design, with the master plan developed by Lominack Kolman Smith already approved.
St. Catherine's Island St. Catherine's Island has been inhabited for at least as long as North American history has been recorded. The Guale Indians, the Spanish, and eventually the English all laid claim to St. Catherine's at one point. Gen. James Oglethorpe eventually transferred the rights to St. Catherine's and other sea islands to the Native Americans, and they in turn bequeathed it to Mary Musgrove, an "Indian princess" who was part European and part Native American. Mary Musgrove and her second husband were the first to establish a plantation on St. Catherine's, a legacy that was eventually taken over by Button Gwinnett. Tunis Campbell, Howard Coffin, and Edward John Noble are other notable residents. Today the island is owned by the St. Catherine's Island Foundation. The St. Catherine's Island Foundation is currently exploring ways to utilize the historic tabby horse barn on the island. Lominack Kolman Smith is assisting them by working on dating the structure through historic photographs, attempting to identify how the building evolved over the years. Preservation efforts will ensure that the building can be used for the foundation's needs into the future.
