The Coast Guard Air Station at Hunter Army Airfield is an air rescue patrol operation primarily responsible for the coastline between Charleston and Jacksonville. This new building, built in 1996, is part of a four building complex which houses its operations and communications functions, training areas for both permanent and reserve personnel, and locker/shower facilities utilized by the entire complex. The building is divided into two adjacent volumes separated by an "internal alley." The north volume houses service functions shared by the entire facility, while the south volume houses the communications functions and requires significant visual contact with the adjoining tarmac. The vocabulary of the exterior is inspired by the façade of the old coast guard operations facility, built in the 1950s. The treatment of window openings on the south façade is both playful and functional, shielding the windows from the harsh southern sun while allowing a strong visual connection to the tarmac. |
