This project consisted of multiple phases of restoration for this 1867 structure, which was originally built as a school for African-American children. The building now serves as a cultural history museum. The first phase consisted of various interior and exterior repairs such as the re-construction of exterior stairs and the stabilization of damaged plaster. The second and most recently completed phase involved a full restoration of the exterior. The roof and all exterior wood elements were patched and repaired, masonry was restored, windows were restored to working order, new paint was applied, and shutters were added based on an original historic photograph. The third phase involved developing a master plan for the museum to incorporate a gift shop, meet ADA accessibility requirements, provide additional display areas for works of art, create an interpretive reconstructed 19th-century classroom, provide storage areas for works of art, classrooms, and site development. This phase of work also included plans to upgrade the current museum display areas to accommodate more sensitive and important works of art. Climate control, UV-ray protection, and security are all elements that were considered. |
